A Literary Recital: Madeleine Thien and the HPO String Quartet

Bryan Prince Bookseller and the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra are thrilled to announce a special literary and musical event featuring 2016 Governor General’s Literary Award-winning author
Madeleine Thien.

Combining readings from Thien’s novel, Do Not Say We Have Nothing, and music by the HPO String Quartet, this unique evening weaves together the rich musicality of Thien’s powerful storytelling and live performances of works by Bach, Beethoven and Shostakovich. Do Not Say We Have Nothing focuses on three gifted musicians whose lives are impacted by the political upheavals created by China’s Cultural Revolution and the Tiananmen Square protests.

This literary performance brings one of Canada’s top novelists to Hamilton for a special evening of words and music, offering a multi-disciplinary celebration of Canadian culture.

Bryan Prince Bookseller is delighted to partner with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra for this exciting event to highlight the beautiful ways in which literature and music intertwine to enrich our lives.

In addition to receiving the 2016 Governor General's Award for Fiction, Do Not Say We Have Nothing has been shortlisted for the 2016 Scotiabank Giller Prize and the Man Booker Prize and been long listed for the 2017 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction.

This special event is made possible with support from Penguin Random House of Canada.

This completes our 2016 event season. Please please watch for exciting upcoming events in the Spring and the new programming launching in our (soon-to-be) renovated room in the Spring also.
